The more difficult container weeds will be presented including some preemergent controls that have been found effective. No preemergents are registered for within enclosed structures; therefore, the preemergents listed are for use when the houses are empty, houses not to be covered for at least three weeks from time of application or in non-crop areas.
As state specialist, Dr. Mathers is responsible for statewide commercial nursery and landscape Extension activities in Ohio. Dr. Mathers' current research focuses on:
Ornamental weed control, with an emphasis on alternatives to chemical controls and reduction of herbicide usage in container production;
Fertility trials, particularly in containers;
The interaction of temperature stress (high and low) on disease susceptibility in ornamental production;
Pieris germplasm evaluations and plant improvement.
Dr. Mathers earned her Ph.D. at Michigan State University, her M.S. in horticulture at the University of Saskatchewan, and her B.S. in Plant Science/Pomology at Cornell University. Her dissertation research focused on cold hardiness of cherries. Dr. Mathers first earned a two-year diploma in forestry and a two-year diploma in agriculture (specializing in fruits and vegetables) from the University of Guelph.
